District Heating Pipeline
The Public Utilities Department of the City of Munich is responsible for operating an extensive district heating pipeline network. The steam is generated in a number of power plants operated on the basis of primary heat and municipal solid waste.
The new compound pipeline, which connects the inner-city part of the network with the recently expanded waste power plant north, passes under the famous English Gardens urban park with its highly sensitve ecology. The project embraced one concrete pipe with an internal diameter of 4.40 m, into which were inserted 2 steam lines and 3 condensate lines.
Commencing from 2 starting shafts, the pipes were driven towards 4 target shafts using the compressurized air tunnelling method. Prefabricated 20 cm thick concrete segments with neoprene seals were installed and the cavities grouted under pressure.
